The Cork Deaf Association teaches a variety of sign language classes at its center on MacCurtain Street, Cork. EVERY year, the Cork Association of the Deaf teaches a series of Irish Sign Language (ISL) courses at its center on MacCurtain Street in Cork City. If you have your own reasons for wanting to learn sign language, contact the Cork Deaf Association for information about their fall courses starting in October. Most people who don't belong to the deaf community don't know that many deaf people are given “sign names”.
It's usually a sign that represents something you're known for, a particular characteristic or personality trait. The course is designed to allow students to learn basic Irish Sign Language (ISL) to communicate with deaf people about family and everyday topics and activities, the deaf community and deaf culture. Since there were no advanced classes at Mallow, I signed up for a sign language course for beginners with the Cork Association of the Deaf and, when I finished that course, I took a one-year level 1 course based on exams. As we begin a new course of classes, here some former and current students from the Cork Deaf Association share their reasons for learning the Isl language.
